The Netherlands is set to introduce legal internet gambling on October 1st, after the implementation of the country’s Remote Gambling Act (KOA) on April 1st.

The Dutch Remote Gambling Act (KOA) was supposed to go into effect on July 1, 2020, with the market opening six months later, at the beginning of 2021. The act’s commencement date was pushed back six months in November 2019, meaning the market would open on July 1, 2021.

After the new coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic hampered preparations for the launch, it was put back again in September 2020, with the date the act was supposed to take effect shifted to 1 March 2021.

The final date for the opening of the market was scheduled to take place on 1 October 2021.

When the Gambling Act takes effect, operators’ bonuses will be severely limited, and gambling will not be advertised between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Certain other aspects of the Dutch government’s new rule have already been disclosed to the European Commission.

These include technical standards, record-keeping, and reporting requirements for licensees, as well as a requirement for licensees to adopt an addiction prevention program. Players must also specify the maximum credit permitted on their account.
